Are all Tierra Farm products organic?
Every Tierra Farm product is certified organic. We are certified by the Northeast Organic Farming Association of New York (NOFA-NY), a USDA accredited organic certifying agency. In addition, our products are certified kosher by Earth Kosher, gluten-free by GFCO, and our coffees are 100% Fair Trade Certified™ by Fair Trade USA.
What does Certified Organic mean?
In a nutshell (pardon the pun), food products carrying the Certified Organic label are grown and processed to the organic standards set forth by the National Organic Program of the USDA. Organic farmers are prohibited from using harmful synthetic pesticides and herbicides, irradiation, sewage sludge, genetically engineered seeds, and synthetic fertilizers. Organic farming maintains and improves the productivity of the soil by enhancing natural biological processes. For more information, visit the USDA National Organic Program website or the Northeast Organic Farming Association website.
Are your products peanut free?
We are a peanut-free facility. We do not store, carry, or process any peanuts of any kind.
What is the shelf life of your products?
Raw nuts and seeds and dried fruit are freshest for four months from date they are packed if properly stored. Roasted nuts and seeds, nut butters, granola, trail mixes and chocolate covered products are freshest for six months from the date they are packed if properly stored. Coffee is a shelf-stable product and can be consumed long after it has been initially roasted. For the freshest cup, consume ground coffee within four weeks of opening the vacuum sealed bag, and whole bean coffee within three months of opening.
What is the best way to store your products?
The best way to store our products is in a cool and dry environment, with limited or no exposure to sunlight or oxygen, i.e. in a sealed container.
Does Tierra Farm manufacture all of its products?
At Tierra Farm, we dry roast and flavor the nuts and seeds. We blend our own unique spices, bake the granola, blend the trail mixes, grind the nut butter, roast the coffee, and coat the nuts and dried fruit in chocolate. It’s all made by hand in small batches for unbeatable taste and freshness. All of our deli cups are packaged to order—we don’t pack your items until after you’ve placed your order.
What is dry roasting?
Our nuts and seeds are slow-roasted to perfection in ovens without any added oils. This makes the nuts healthier and truer to flavor.
Do your products contain GMOs?
No. None of our products contain genetically modified organisms.
How is your coffee sourced and produced?
All of our coffee is organic and 100% Fair Trade Certified™. We roast our coffee beans to perfection in small batches in our dedicated coffee production facility on-site. Our staff coffee expert often travels to many of the small family farms from which we buy our shade-grown coffee to find the very best green coffee beans, and participates in tasting and grading activities to ensure you are getting product of the highest caliber.
Does your dried fruit have sweeteners or preservatives? How are they dried?
Our certified organic dried fruits—with the exception of crystallized ginger, which is processed with organic sugar—contain no added refined sugars, sulfur, or other preservatives. Our dried cranberries and blueberries are sweetened with organic apple juice for palatability. Our fruit is either sun dried or kiln/tunnel dried to specific moisture contents, depending on the product.
Are your products gluten free?
Tierra Farm is a Certified Gluten Free Facility under GFCO. We do not process any products which contain gluten.
Other allergen considerations?
Tierra Farm does not process any wheat, eggs, fish, shellfish, or peanuts. Our tamari, and all of our products made with tamari, contains soy. Our dark chocolate chips also contain soy, while the white chocolate chunks contain both soy and milk. All of the chocolate products are manufactured in a facility that handles milk, tree nuts and soy. Because products and processes can change, please always refer to individual product labels.
Are your products vegan?
Most of our products are suitable for vegans, with the exception of honey roasted nuts and mixes containing white chocolate chunks (as these contain milk). In addition, our chocolate coated nuts and dried fruits are finished with Confectioner’s Glaze, which contains shellac. While shellac is not a part of the kerria lacca insect, it is a secretion from this insect (similar to the honey making process). While our chocolate coated products are suitable for vegetarians, they are not for vegan use.
Are your products irradiated?
No. None of our products are irradiated.
Are your nuts raw?
At Tierra Farm our nuts labeled as “raw” follow all USDA food safety standards. To adhere to USDA standards some of our raw products may be steam or heat treated, but still labeled as “raw” as the product maintains its raw characteristics- taste, texture and nutrient content.
Where do your products come from?
With over 14 years of experience in the organic nuts and dried fruits industry, we have developed strong relationships with some of the best organic farmers in the world. Where a choice exists, we source domestically or from as close to home as possible. We strive to get our products directly from farmers, and take every opportunity to visit the farms from which we buy. This allows us to preserve our organic integrity and ensure fair business practices throughout the supply chain.
